Is it mandatory to have a helmet to ride an electric scooter?
To answer clearly and succinctly, wearing a helmet on an electric scooter is not mandatory in urban areas. But for more safety, we can only recommend that you wear a helmet on an electric scooter. Even when being careful on the road, other vehicles you encounter may not be as cautious and an electric scooter, besides being a relatively small object, has no protection against impacts. It is therefore strongly advised to wear a helmet to ride safely on an electric scooter. To be sure to comply with the current law, you can consult our article to find out when a helmet is mandatory on an electric scooter.
What does the regulation say?
The latest regulation to date was released in September 2023. The law states that wearing a helmet is not mandatory, knowing that children under 12 years old are not allowed to be on an electric scooter. But given the ever-increasing influx of electric scooters in France, this may change in the coming years so that everyone is protected on the road. More and more cyclists wear helmets when they ride their bikes. The movement should logically then follow the same path for electric scooter users.
What about insurance?
The latest regulation also states that insurance is now mandatory to ride an electric scooter. This insurance must at least cover civil liability. This coverage protects against all damages caused to a third party as well as to their vehicle. It is important to remember that each vehicle must have its own insurance. Thus, if you own several electric scooters, you must subscribe to insurance for each scooter.
In the long run, it is therefore likely that insurers will increase their rates if electric scooter users do not wear helmets. According to the insurer Luko, 40% of injuries on electric scooters occur to the head. While this represents an additional cost, this insurance can also cover scooter theft. Very useful when you invest in a high-priced electric scooter.

What other equipment is mandatory for riding a scooter?
Other accessories are essential for riding an electric scooter. The fluorescent vest is mandatory when riding in low light conditions. So be sure to equip yourself properly if you ride at night, or even simply when you return home in winter after a long day of work. As night falls quickly, it is useful to anticipate well by equipping yourself properly for a trouble-free journey.
The other mandatory equipment is generally present from the purchase of a new adult electric scooter. Since 2020, these vehicles must be sold equipped with a white front light, a red rear light, reflectors (or reflective strips) on the sides of the scooter, as well as a non-electric bell. If you bought your vehicle before this date, it is necessary to equip yourself with these accessories on your own if your scooter does not have them, under penalty of a 38 euro fine.
What are the different types of helmets for electric scooters?
Several types of helmets are available for riding an electric scooter. But the question most electric scooter users ask is: Which scooter helmet to choose? Because indeed everyone knows helmets for bikes or motorcycles, but are there helmets specific to scooters?
Not really. But then what type of helmet suits scooter riders? If there are no helmets specific to electric scooters, it is simply because the different styles of helmets on the market are perfectly suitable for electric scooter use.
As with any equipment, the choice of helmet depends on your own needs. Some helmets are better suited for speed, others for night travel, off-road riding, or simply urban riders, etc... It is important that the helmet you choose suits you so that you don't leave it aside during your electric scooter rides.
The bicycle helmet
Light and compact, bicycle helmets are perfectly suited for use with an electric scooter. If your main selection criterion is based on lightness, they are the most comfortable option for you.
Many models are available, ranging from folding helmet models to store them in a small bag, to models equipped with LEDs on the back to optimize visibility at night. The price range of bicycle helmets can vary depending on the different options you want to have.
On the other hand, bicycle helmets are the least protective of helmets for electric scooters. Especially if you plan to exceed the 25 km/h allowed on public roads. This does not mean that the protection is poor, but simply that other types of helmets cover the head more effectively. But beyond the purely safety aspect, don't forget that the helmet that protects the most is above all the one you don't hesitate to wear on every electric scooter ride.
The snowboard or skateboard helmet
The snowboard or skateboard helmet is undoubtedly the most suitable choice for the electric scooter. Both in terms of comfort and safety, these are the helmets offering the best compromise. In addition to bicycle helmets, they have reinforced protection at the back of the skull as well as on the sides up to the ears.
Some models are even equipped with visor to better protect you from the wind. If you don't hesitate to exceed the regulated 25 km/h with your powerful electric scooter, this can be an excellent choice to maintain the lightness of a helmet (like those for bicycles) while maximizing your safety.
Made of a hard shell in ABS and polycarbonate, snowboard helmets undergo tests for resistance to very high impacts.
Another big advantage of the snowboard helmet is that it is better ventilated than a motorcycle helmet to let your skull breathe. It is thus possible to use your helmet all year round with comfort and safety.
The cross helmet
Designed primarily for off-road use, the cross helmet is mainly suitable for off-road enthusiasts with their electric scooter. Riding on rough and unpaved paths is very different from a typical urban route. Obstacles and various jolts can cause more falls on an electric scooter.
With an extended chin guard to better anticipate impacts on the front, the cross helmet is suited for sporty riding. Well ventilated to avoid sweating, these helmets are not equipped with a visor. You will therefore need to invest in a removable mask or goggles to avoid dust and possible projectiles.
The motorcycle helmet
The motorcycle helmet is the most protective, offering optimal safety for the head and neck, but it is also heavy and bulky, not well suited for electric scooters. There are three types of motorcycle helmets:
-
Jet helmet: light, open, protecting the forehead and ears, without a chin guard, ideal for low-speed urban trips.
-
Full-face helmet: offering maximum protection, including the jaw and chin, suitable for high speeds but very heavy and impractical in the city.
-
Modular helmet: combining the advantages of jet and full-face helmets, with an adjustable chin guard, allowing good ventilation or full protection, but at a higher price.
Each model has its advantages and disadvantages, depending on needs and type of riding.

How to choose your helmet size for electric scooter?
Too small or too large, an ill-fitting electric scooter helmet will not be comfortable for the wearer. But beyond that, a helmet that is not the right size does not protect effectively in case of an accident. That is why it is important to choose a helmet adapted to the morphology of your skull.
To know your helmet size, a tape measure can do the trick to take measurements easily. If you don't have one available, a simple string placed around the head can be used instead. Then just lay the string flat on a measuring ruler.
Like bicycle helmets, the different models for electric scooter can come in unisex sizes. Depending on the different helmet brands, it is necessary to take measurements carefully in order to buy a perfectly fitting model.
Once the size selection is made, it is crucial to wear your helmet properly. For this, the helmet must be installed horizontally to cover the forehead as well as the back of the head. Then the strap must be fastened enough so that it stays firmly in place without going over the chin, but not too tight so you can turn your head properly.
What are the different helmet standards?
When investing in a helmet, it is essential that it complies with European standards to perfectly protect you. The protection of your head is ensured both by the shell and by the strap used to keep the helmet firmly in place during a possible fall. Here are the different standards to check before buying an electric scooter helmet:
- For a bike or skateboard helmet: NF EN 1078
- For a snowboard helmet: NF EN 1077
- For a motorcycle helmet: ECE 22-04 or ECE 22-05 followed by the letter P (for full-face models), PJ (for modular helmets) and J (for Jet). Note that only modular helmets with P/J can be used in traffic in open or closed position.
